Chapter 121: Who is the boss lady?
TL: Etude
Autumn is a season suitable for romance, as the autumn leaves throughout the campus have turned golden yellow, presenting a unique charm.
During this season, at Linchuan University, one could easily spot couples strolling along walkways piled with fallen leaves, their love imbued with a flair akin to idol dramas amidst the desolate autumn wind.
However, Gao Wenhui was not happy.
She had no interest in dating; she just wanted to ship couples.
Based on her observations over the week, Jiang Qin appeared less frequently, while Feng Nanshu became increasingly silent.
Her daily routine of attending classes, eating, and sleeping was carried out expressionlessly, lacking her previous vivacity and liveliness.
Whispers circulated among the students of Finance Class 4, speculating that Feng Nanshu and Jiang Qin had broken up, which seemed to explain her growing aloofness.
But what they didn’t know was that this was actually Feng Nanshu’s true nature.
Her expression was cold like the moonlight on a frosty night, her gaze as frozen as the snow, seemingly detached from the world, confining her heart to a tiny world of her own.
That world was heavily guarded, locked with the strongest of locks, to which even she did not possess the key.
As dusk fell after sunset, the last class of Finance Class 4 ended.
Feng Nanshu, holding her books, silently walked out of the lecture hall. After returning to her dormitory and taking off her small leather shoes, she quietly climbed onto her bed. Sitting on the edge, she stared blankly out the window. Her feet, clad in white socks, rested on the bed, no longer swinging playfully as before, but instead hung limply.
The nights of autumn were arriving earlier, and the dusk sky became increasingly magnificent.
The little rich lady’s eyes reflected the fiery red sky, her delicate, curled eyelashes gradually taking on an enchanting rose gold hue.
“Nanshu, are you unhappy?” Gao Wenhui couldn’t help but ask.
“Jiang Qin doesn’t hang out with me anymore.”
Feng Nanshu’s voice was soft and serene, her gaze following a bird outside the window towards the distance, lending a somewhat wistful look to her eyes.
Gao Wenhui squinted her eyes and said, “That damn Jiang Qin, should I find someone to take him out?”
“No!”
“You can’t even bear the thought of it, can you?”
Feng Nanshu continued to gaze outside, but nodded affirmatively.
Gao Wenhui was actually aware of why Jiang Qin had been absent recently. She knew he was busy with some off-campus promotion, shuttling back and forth between Linchuan University and Technology University, barely having time to even drink water, so she couldn’t really blame him.
Reportedly, his absenteeism in Advanced Mathematics was reaching critical levels, almost as if he had given up.
But she never imagined that Jiang Qin’s absence would affect Feng Nanshu so profoundly, reminiscent of the early days of their friendship.
Every time they discussed going out for movies or karaoke, Feng Nanshu would shake her head, insisting that Jiang Qin would surely take her, as if he was the only one in the world who could truly protect her.
Gao Wenhui had even encouraged Feng Nanshu a few times to call Jiang Qin, to do whatever it took to bring him back, whether by feigning illness or acting coquettishly.
But Feng Nanshu disagreed, because Jiang Qin had said he was very busy and wanted her to behave, suggesting she reluctantly hang out with Gao Wenhui if she felt bored.
Gao Wenhui was furious, thinking, “Is that something a human would say?”
And, can the companionship of a best friend really replace dependence on a boyfriend?
Fan Shuling returned from the cafeteria and couldn’t help but ask Gao Wenhui, “What’s with Nanshu?”
“She’s missing Jiang Qin. Thinks about him during the day, at night, and even more so while washing her feet.”
“???”
Feng Nanshu spoke expressionlessly, “Wenhui, it’s because today’s sunset is exceptionally beautiful, worth admiring.”
Gao Wenhui couldn’t take it anymore. “Give it up, admitting you miss him won’t bother him!”
“Has Jiang Qin really not been here recently?” Fan Shuling couldn’t help but ask.
“He’s come twice, but each time he was in a hurry and didn’t even have time for extra words. Last time he even snatched a chicken leg from my meal – the only meat dish I had – it infuriated me!”
“That’s so mean, sounds like something he would do.”
Feng Nanshu turned her head slightly annoyed, “I already gave it back to you, and bought you two more.”
Gao Wenhui was momentarily speechless, “Okay, okay, I get it. I won’t speak ill of your man anymore, happy?”
“You also can’t kill him.”
“…”
While they were talking, shouts suddenly came from outside the window, clearly calling out “boss lady”. This term was rare in the school, prompting numerous girls to open their windows and look out, curious about who was being called.
Gao Wenhui, usually quick-witted, was caught off guard by the term. Just as she was about to look out the window, she found Feng Nanshu had already put on her shoes and run out of the dormitory.
Meanwhile, in Room 505 of the Finance Department.
Jiang Tian, Jian Chun, and Song Qingqing also opened their windows, searching for the source of the voice. They were a bit stunned when they spotted Feng Nanshu. Ever since the South Street hit-and-run incident, they knew about Jiang Qin being the owner of Zhihu.
So, calling Feng Nanshu “boss lady” wasn’t really a problem.
The term was neutral, unlike terms like “top student”, “goddess”, or “campus belle” which carried a certain praise. However, for some reason, they were filled with envy and jealousy at this title.
How wonderful it would be if they were called that – Jiang Tian thought so, Song Qing Qing thought so, and even Jian Chun, though reluctant to admit, had thought the same for a second.
Five minutes later, Feng Nanshu returned to the dormitory, holding a team-building photo album, her eyes somewhat bright.
“What’s this?”
“Xuemei brought it. She’s a good person.” Feng Nanshu placed the album on the table.
Gao Wenhui and Fan Shuling, curious, came closer and saw many unfamiliar faces. They first thought it was some promotional booklet, but then they realized it was a completed photo book when they saw the pictures of Feng Nanshu and Jiang Qin.
They didn’t know the people from Room 208 well, so they flipped through quickly, focusing only on photos with Feng Nanshu and Jiang Qin.
However, just as they were about to flip past the third-to-last page, a slender and fair hand suddenly stopped them.
Feng Nanshu leaned in close, her eyes fixed on the page, her mouth slowly opening.
“Who’s this bear climbing trees to steal honey?” Gao Wenhui asked curiously.
Hearing this, Feng Nanshu raised her head with a shocked expression.
Gao Wenhui instantly understood, “Okay, I get it. Seeing your unhappy face, that bear must be Jiang Qin.”
Fan Shuling also leaned in curiously, “What’s Jiang Qin doing?”
“Climbing a tree.”
“It doesn’t look like an ordinary tree; are the leaves red?”
Gao Wenhui, leaning closer, suddenly realized, “Oh my God, isn’t that the tree hung with wishes for love in scenic spots?”
“Definitely. Look, Jiang Qin is hanging a sign up there,” pointed out Fan Shuling.
Gao Wenhui’s spirits lifted immediately, “This is the kind of drama I love!”
“What is dog food?”
“Jiang Qin says single people are called ‘single dogs’, and being showered with couples’ displays of affection is like eating ‘dog food’. Hey, Nanshu, why aren’t you in the photo?”
As Gao Wenhui asked, she looked up but found Feng Nanshu pressing a hand to her chest, staring blankly out the window, her mind seemingly far away.
While the little rich lady had time to daydream, Jiang Qin was far too busy. He hadn’t anticipated the importance that Technology University placed on work-study programs, almost excessively so. They demanded his initial project proposal, a formal document from Professor Yan, and finally, a detailed work-study plan from Jiang Qin himself.
After making three trips back and forth, Jiang Qin finally gathered all the necessary documents, grumbling to himself about the exhausting process. “Why is it so difficult to get a little advantage?”
“Brother, have some water,” Cao Xinyue offered him a cup.
Jiang Qin, upon hearing this, felt it made sense. “Right, it’d be awful to die without spending any money.”
“Better go take a nap.”
“I’ll head off then. Remember to get someone to fix the window in Room 207.”
Jiang Qin was concerned about the drafty window, reminding Cao Xinyue once more before heading back to Room 207 to sleep.
Tang Lin watched Jiang Qin leave, barely suppressing a laugh. She thought it was obvious what he was up to. He’d never visited the general office before, but recently he’d been coming almost daily.
He couldn’t possibly be doing all this for himself; it must be for the campus beauty’s best friend.
She didn’t know that Jiang Qin was navigating through the work-study channel, as his project was overseen by Cao Xinyue. To her, it seemed suspicious that he’d divide the task into three parts when it could’ve been done in one.
But she was right about one thing – he was indeed on the right path.
Why? Because to chase a girl, you need to constantly make your presence felt. If you don’t even have presence, how can you hope to gain her affection? It’s all part of the strategy.
“Tang Lin, you might as well staple my hand,” Cao Xinyue said, glaring at her.
Tang Lin quickly came back to her senses, moving the stapler away. “Sorry, I got distracted.”
“It’s good to be thoughtful, but being absent-minded isn’t. You could easily make mistakes that way.”
“I just find it funny to see boys clumsily trying to make their presence felt around Hong Yan.”
“Who?”
“That Jiang Qin who just left.”
Cao Xinyue looked at her as if she were a fool, thinking Hong Yan was indeed beautiful, ranked as the fourth campus beauty, and even more impressive given her transfer disadvantage. But had she heard of Feng Nanshu?
Just then, Hong Yan returned from the restroom, noticing Jiang Qin had left the office. She couldn’t help feeling a slight sense of loss.
“Hong Yan, Xue Gang has invited you to dinner.”
“Please decline for me, I won’t go.”
Tang Lin sighed, refusing the invitation from Xue Gang, the vice-chair of the International Trade Department, on behalf of Hong Yan. She thought to herself, it’s not that I’m ungrateful for your treats and unwilling to help, but my best friend is just too hard to impress.
Chapter 122: Group Buying Website
TL: Etude
The next morning, Jiang Qin drove to Linchuan University of Science and Technology, delivering all the prepared materials.
After reviewing them, Hu Maolin, the director of the university’s Youth League Committee, nodded and stamped the work-study approval document with a red seal.
Then, Shengshi Advertising drove directly to Linchuan University of Science and Technology, delivering new signs and freshly printed flyers.
Since it was deep autumn and the temperature had dropped sharply, making mornings and evenings chilly, the use of advertising fans was no longer feasible, which Jiang Qin found slightly regrettable.
However, Shengshi also provided other alternatives for Jiang Qin to choose from, such as umbrellas, water bottles, and hats.
But compared to fans, the cost of these promotional items was too high and not economical. Moreover, if the quality was poor, they would not only fail to serve their promotional purpose but might also cause annoyance.
“Damn, what if I use your umbrella on a rainy day and it breaks halfway through?”
So, after weighing his options, Jiang Qin chose to stick with ordinary flyers.
The students of Linchuan University of Science and Technology were already looking forward to the campus beauty contest, so they were quite receptive to it. Jiang Qin specially instructed Pang Hai to mention the contest on the flyers, compensating for the lack of practicality of the chosen medium.
After replacing the sign of the Encounter Milk Tea Shop, the branch of the Xi Tian Milk Tea Shop at the university reopened for business.
Simultaneously, Jiang Qin gathered a large number of part-time university students to distribute flyers around the campus.
Guo Zihang, leading the flyer distribution team, worked diligently, distributing flyers all day until he was exhausted, profoundly realizing the hardships of life.
“Brother Jiang, distributing flyers is really tough work.”
“Yeah, damn, my hands are sore.”
Jiang Qin was squatting on the steps, drinking milk tea. The ‘soreness’ he referred to was from holding the milk tea cup, as his flyers were on the ground, eagerly grabbed by the surrounding female students.
Seeing this, Guo Zihang’s mouth twitched, “Stepfather, teach me, how do you always manage to be so charming?”
“Want to learn?”
Guo Zihang nodded fiercely, his eyes filled with endless desire.
Jiang Qin coughed, straightened his back, and slightly extended his arm as if holding something, then started drawing arcs in the air.
“?!”
Then, Guo Zihang practiced this motion while distributing flyers, his arms sore from the effort. He was met with rolled eyes and looks that seemed to say he was an idiot, leaving his face burning with embarrassment.
He wasn’t sure if he was doing the motion wrong or missing some essential trick. Meanwhile, Jiang Qin had already returned to Linchuan University, leaving Guo without a chance to ask for advice, so he kept practicing.
That evening, while practicing Jiang Qin’s motion, Guo returned to his dormitory, amusing his roommates.
“Old Guo, what’s that motion? Turning a steering wheel with one hand?”
“…”
Guo Zihang froze, then had a sudden realization, as if he had understood the true meaning of the gesture.
Damn, the stepfather meant that my charm comes from owning an Audi!
So, what was the point of just practicing the gesture? It was the car that mattered!
Unaware of Guo Zihang’s drastic misunderstanding, Jiang Qin had already returned to Linchuan University in his Audi, heading to Room 208 of the Entrepreneurship Center.
Su Nai was waiting for him in the office, with the computer still on, displaying the homepage of a newly created website.
The campus beauty contest at Linchuan University of Science and Technology was gradually gaining momentum. Dong Wenhao was already busy beyond measure, but Su Nai had not been involved. Instead, as per Jiang Qin’s instructions, she led the new team in building a website named “Group Buying”.
“Boss, this is the new site built according to your requirements. Take a look.”
“That was fast. It’s only been five days, right? Su Nai, I knew I was right about you. You have the look of a successful entrepreneur.”
Su Nai coughed, “Don’t get too excited yet, boss. This is just a framework, something like a… PowerPoint presentation.”
Jiang Qin was slightly disappointed, “So what’s it for?”
“It’s for effective communication, to avoid starting off on the wrong foot. You have to lay a foundation before building a house, right?”
Jiang Qin pulled up a chair and sat down, “Alright, you make sense. Go ahead with your presentation.”
Su Nai nodded and began demonstrating the various designs and details of the website. “The basic sections of Group Buying include shopping, food, entertainment, and lifestyle. The subcategories are not done yet, but the functionality of the third and second-level pages is similar. There’s also the window display effect and the design of the pop-up discount pages…”
“That’s pretty good. It includes most of what was in the plan,” Jiang Qin affirmed.
“Then I’ll continue working in this direction.”
“How long will it take?”
“Group Buying is more complicated than Zhihu because of its many sections and features. With the six people I’ve recently recruited, it will take about a month to implement all the functionalities in the plan.”
Jiang Qin nodded, thinking a month wasn’t too long.
The campus beauty contest at Linchuan University of Science and Technology was just starting, and from warming up to finishing, it would also take about a month. The timing matched perfectly.
“Then go ahead with it. Don’t worry about other things. If there’s an issue, call Wei Lanlan. She’s working part-time as my secretary. I’ve explained everything to her. Prioritize your work here.”
“Got it, boss!”
Jiang Qin patted Su Nai’s shoulder and walked to the window, stretching lazily.
Group Buying was the next monetization tool he planned to launch. It was a significant step and an important attempt in the entrepreneurial phase, inspired, of course, by Ye Ziqing.
Professor Yan had been puzzled lately, wondering why Jiang Qin no longer inquired about “entrepreneurial failures.” In fact, Jiang Qin had spent an afternoon flipping through the campus newspaper, understanding the cause and effect of the situation.
Ye Ziqing was the unfortunate student Professor Yan had mentioned, stirring things up in the university like Jiang Qin since her freshman year.
Her initial platform wasn’t the internet but organizing university students through QQ groups by classes and dorms. She compiled lists of desired items and collaborated with nearby merchants for bulk purchase discounts, earning a commission from the merchants.
As her network grew, so did the number of group buying channels. However, problems started to arise.
Management and procurement required more people, increasing costs and limiting future development directions.
To resolve this, Ye Ziqing created a website, allowing students to select items they wanted to buy. She then focused on the most popular items, assigning specific people to procure them.
The issue was that this move turned Ye Ziqing into a middleman.
And being a middleman usually meant pleasing neither side.
Eventually, Ye Ziqing found her team increasingly difficult to manage, and the number of part-time students she recruited grew, crowding together and becoming a huge burden for Juihui Group Buying. (Guessing that’s the company name)
But Ye Ziqing didn’t give up, thanks to her family’s good financial situation. She started spending money to break free from constraints.
Jiang Qin didn’t know the details of what happened afterward, but he guessed that things got increasingly difficult and slowed down until they fell apart.
Positioning herself as a product intermediary, addressing user needs to find sellers, worked on a small scale but had its limitations.
Had Ye Ziqing stopped to rethink, shedding the burdens in her team and changing her approach, she might not have ended in such a mess.
But one shouldn’t judge her past actions with the knowledge of the future.
At that time, most people who managed group buying groups followed a similar mindset. Ye Ziqing was just following the trend and, with her substantial financial backing, inadvertently found herself in a tough spot.
“It’s all tears of the times.”
“I’m different. I’m a bug of the era.”
Jiang Qin knew that the internet era was about to dawn, and the real future lay in creating platforms and cloud markets.
Only by being someone who can set the rules can you stand taller and go further.
However, Jiang Qin wasn’t yet daring enough to think about setting rules on a large scale, as that required significant investment. But small-scale monetization was still within reach.
This task might be difficult for others, but not for Jiang Qin because he had a forum, meaning he had vast resources of users and merchants.
First, use competitions to generate traffic, then leverage that traffic to attract users.
Users are the foundation, and the group buying website would replace forum advertisements as the ultimate focus.
Jiang Qin wasn’t shooting in the dark; he had a plan.
During the campus beauty contest, many merchants inquired about advertising. However, faced with high advertising costs, smaller businesses quickly backed out.
Now, by providing a platform and drawing in traffic, resistance from these businesses would likely be minimal, right?
“Jiang Qin!”
Just then, footsteps sounded at the door, and Tang Lin and Hong Yan arrived at room 208, followed by a workman in blue overalls. “Senior Cao asked us to get the school maintenance man to fix the window in 207.”
“Really? Thank you so much. That window gap has been killing me. I can hardly sleep at night, and mosquitoes get in.”
Jiang Qin left 208 and led the workman to 207.
He had been so busy lately that he rarely returned to his dormitory, sometimes making do with staying in 207. But that broken window had greatly diminished the quality of his sleep.
Meanwhile, Tang Lin and Hong Yan sneaked into 208 for a quiet tour, eventually fixing their gaze on a data chart on the wall.
“Yan Yan, I heard that this website made over half a million in advertising fees last month. Do you think it’s true or false?”
Hong Yan couldn’t help but nod, “It’s probably true.”
Tang Lin’s hand couldn’t resist gliding over Jiang Qin’s chair, somewhat wistful, “It’s really impressive, but it’s missing something.”
“What’s that?”
“It’s missing a boss lady to preside over it.”
At that moment, Su Nai returned from the restroom and slightly frowned upon hearing the words “boss lady.”
Were they discussing a boss lady?
Yeah, the boss lady was the best, the very best in the whole world.
Chapter 123: Stories at the Dinner Table
TL: Etude
The school handyman’s skills were still quite nimble. As he dismantled the window frame, he muttered about a broken hinge.
After replacing it with a new one, the window could close properly. Jiang Qin nodded in satisfaction, thinking that whether he slept here in the future or not, at least he wouldn’t have to worry about being bitten by mosquitoes anymore.
Or, on the next unexpected rainy day, when he and the young wealthy woman ran in from the rain, they wouldn’t have to huddle together under the same blanket to stay warm.
Hmm?
Jiang Qin’s smile suddenly faded, and his expression grew serious.
Was not having to huddle under the same blanket with the young wealthy woman a good thing or a bad thing?
He couldn’t help but recall the scene of Feng Nanshu, small and tucked beside him, with a silly expression and bright eyes. She clutched the blanket up to her fair neck, only her beautiful little face exposed, as docile as a cat. His expression grew a bit more solemn.
“The window frames in the Entrepreneurship Center are all old and somewhat warped. Even with the new hinges, they need to be handled gently. Don’t push too hard, or they’ll still let the wind in,” the handyman advised as he descended the ladder.
Jiang Qin came back to his senses and asked indifferently, “How hard is too hard to push?”
“Just pushing hard on the handle.”
Jiang Qin grasped the handle and pushed hard. The handyman was slightly startled: “Do you want to fix it or break it?”
“I’m just testing it, and indeed, it’s very sturdy,” Jiang Qin said, patting his hands and nodding like a professional quality inspector.
“Of course, it’s sturdy; I fixed it. Do you still need to test it? Hurry up and sign the work order; I’m done here.”
Jiang Qin signed the maintenance form for the handyman and then left room 207, one after the other.
At that time, Tang Lin and Hong Yan had already finished their tour of 208 and were preparing to return to the main office.
“It’s almost dinner time. We’re going to the cafeteria. Do you want to join us for dinner?”
Hong Yan was initially being pulled away by Tang Lin, but after a few steps, she couldn’t resist turning back to ask.
Hearing this, Tang Lin was quite surprised. Although she hadn’t known her friend for long, she had a rough idea of her personality. Everyone thought she was modest and polite, but in reality, she was quite cold.
Politeness was just a means for her to maintain relationships; coldness was her true nature.
So Tang Lin had never heard Hong Yan actively invite someone to dinner before. Of course, Jiang Qin’s response also surprised her.
“Today, I’ll pass. I have a dinner engagement tonight, and I’m busy these next two days. Let’s have a proper rest when it’s over. We can eat and drink then.”
“Okay, then we’ll wait until you’re done.”
Tang Lin’s eyes grew more bewildered. She glanced at Hong Yan, then couldn’t help but look at Jiang Qin again, her mind in a daze.
It was surprising enough that Hong Yan took the initiative to invite a guy to dinner, but it was even more baffling that he declined to dine with her.
Isn’t he the one who runs to the main office three times a day?
Why back out now when the opportunity arises?
And why does her friend have to wait for him to finish his work for a chance to dine together?
Tang Lin wasn’t sure how much sincerity was in that statement and how much was just politeness, but she had never heard Hong Yan speak like that to anyone else.
“Yan Yan, do you really want to become the boss lady of 208?” Tang Lin finally blurted out after a long pause.
“Just having dinner together means becoming the boss lady? If that’s the case, Jiang Qin would have too many boss ladyes. Probably the whole of 208 couldn’t accommodate them all.”
Tang Lin pursed her lips, “With your beauty, you could become the boss lady of 208 in a minute, and all the others would have to step aside.”
Hong Yan grabbed her friend’s arm, “Confidence is a good thing.”
“I’m just stating facts. You’re the pinnacle of beauty among all the girls I’ve met. I don’t believe anyone can resist your charm.”
By this time, Jiang Qin had walked far away and didn’t hear their conversation.
He got into his car, drove out of Linchuan University’s gate, and headed straight for Linchuan University of Science and Technology.
The huge PVC ranking board from Shengshi had already been delivered, standing prominently in front of the milk tea shop, appearing particularly magnificent under the night sky.
Half an hour later, Zhang Ming’an, the deputy director of the Political and Educational Office, and Hu Maolin, the head of the Youth League Committee, emerged from the darkness and got into Jiang Qin’s Audi. They examined the car’s console and then couldn’t help but smack their lips.
The students of Linchuan were too extravagant, driving a BBA in their freshman year.
Ten minutes later, they arrived at a nearby restaurant. The Chinese-style entrance was adorned with two bright red lanterns, and the glass windows faced the silhouettes of dine-in customers.
The three entered a private room in the restaurant, ordered a table full of dishes, and opened two bottles of wine.
When he was promoting the forum at Linchuan University, Jiang Qin never invited leaders to dinner because Professor Yan, who was in charge of the Entrepreneurship Center, detested this kind of dining culture. According to him, it’s fine for men to enjoy a good drink and gather friends, but using drinking as an excuse to set barriers, show off status, and seek attention was pure idiocy.
But this is a society driven by personal relationships, and it won’t change just because of one person’s likes and dislikes. Moreover, people like Professor Yan are in the minority, so Jiang Qin felt it necessary to invite Zhang Ming’an and Hu Maolin for a meal.
Zhang Ming’an was the quiet type, a characteristic seemingly common among Professor Yan’s students.
As the head of the Youth League Committee, Hu Maolin usually carried himself with a certain aloofness. He wouldn’t normally talk much, but he spoke a lot during this meal.
He told Jiang Qin that promoting entrepreneurship was his own affair, but if it was done under the name of work-study, then it wasn’t just about one person.
Both Linchuan University and Linchuan University of Science and Technology had many impoverished students enrolling each year. Although there were scholarships, they were merely a drop in the bucket. Some students had to work desperately during summer vacation to pay for their tuition, and some even had to support their families.
Hu Maolin didn’t specify how many impoverished students Jiang Qin should hire, but he sternly advised not to delay wages or dismiss employees without cause.
Director Hu was sincere, and Jiang Qin nodded promptly. He couldn’t possibly delay wages, especially not for impoverished students.
Over an hour later, Director Hu got up to leave the restaurant. Jiang Qin escorted him out and casually handed him a bag of Xi Tian milk tea.
“Director, this is the new milk tea from our shop, with a Chinese flavor.”
“A new flavor? Great, my daughter loves milk tea.”
Director Hu took the bag of milk tea without hesitation, got into a taxi, and waved goodbye warmly as he left.
Then, Jiang Qin and Zhang Ming’an returned to the restaurant to continue their meal. As it was about to end, the usually silent Zhang Ming’an finally spoke.
“Actually, Director Hu didn’t mean to pressure you with those words. He’s just cautious because of a mess he once had to clean up.”
Jiang Qin wasn’t surprised, “I know, Ye Ziqing’s mess.”
“Professor Yan told you about that?” Zhang Ming’an was somewhat surprised.
Jiang Qin shook his head, “I found out on my own. Although I don’t have much information, I’m good at filling in the blanks. I heard Ye Ziqing abruptly terminated her project back then, owing many part-time college students their wages. It caused quite a stir, forcing the school to clean up after her.”
Zhang Ming’an pursed his lips, “Actually, it’s not entirely Ye’s fault. She had no idea when her website started employing so many part-time college students, and she didn’t recognize any of them. She certainly wouldn’t pay them.”
“Hmm, I understand that situation. When a project grows, it’s natural for problems to arise,” Jiang Qin agreed.
“That’s good to know. Especially since your project is under the banner of work-study, any mistakes could be far more serious than what happened with Ye Ziqing. You need to be extra cautious in this regard.”
Jiang Qin’s expression was serious, “Director, to be honest, I’m also from a poor family.”
“Put your Audi keys in your pocket before you say that!” Zhang Ming’an replied with a look of disbelief.
“The Audi was bought with my own money, but that doesn’t change the fact that I come from a poor background, nor does it change my enthusiasm and determination for work-study!”
“There’s no one else here, no need for grandstanding.”
“I would say the same even if the Jade Emperor himself were here.”
Zhang Ming’an gave him a helpless look, “Just make sure you don’t abandon your project like Ye Ziqing did. However, since you are working on a forum and she was into group buying, you shouldn’t end up in the same situation. But you seem to be having some trouble with monetization. Have you thought about your next plan?”
“I’m planning to start group buying next.”
“???!!!”
Seeing Zhang Ming’an’s face turn pale, Jiang Qin quickly added, “Director Zhang, don’t panic. My approach is completely different from hers. Don’t worry.”
Zhang Ming’an relaxed slightly, “Still, you need to keep your feet on the ground and not repeat others’ mistakes.”
“I know. I definitely won’t corner myself into a dead end.”
Zhang Ming’an nodded, then remembered something else, “I’ve heard a rumor recently that the Linchuan Youth Daily wants to do a special interview with you, to promote your entrepreneurial story. You should mention the support you received from the University of Science and Technology, and also emphasize their support for work-study programs.”
Jiang Qin was slightly taken aback, “An interview with me? What’s there to interview about a perfectly ordinary college student?”
“You’ve been enrolled for only two months and have already led over thirty college students in entrepreneurship, earning more than half a million. And you still think you’re ordinary?”
“But Director, I just want to make money, not become famous.”
Zhang Ming’an raised his eyebrows, “That’s not acceptable. We can’t just help you for nothing. You’re a student of our university, and your project has nothing to do with us. Is it too much to ask for you to say a few good words about us?”
Reluctantly, Jiang Qin agreed, “Alright, I’ll say a few words.”
Zhang Ming’an nodded in satisfaction, then couldn’t help but reflect, “When I was your age, all I thought about was studying and dating. I never considered entrepreneurship. You say you’re poor, but you drive an Audi. It’s strange.”
“It’s all about the desire for money, which doesn’t conflict with studying or dating,” Jiang Qin answered.
“So, you’re good at studying?”
“…”
Jiang Qin thought of his calculus grades.
Zhang Ming’an laughed, “So, do you have a girlfriend?”
“…”
Jiang Qin remembered his motto.
“Don’t give up on what you should have because of your pursuit of money. Money is indeed beautiful, but youth is not only beautiful but also fleeting.”
Chapter 124: The Little Rich Lady Lost Her Soul
TL: Etude
The following day, in the afternoon, Jiang Qin returned from the Polytechnic University. Without even stopping by his dormitory, he headed straight for the teaching building.
The campus beauty contest there was gradually getting on track and didn’t need his close supervision anymore. All it took was a group of enthusiastic otakus waving flags and cheering, like arrows released from their bows or bullets fired from their barrels, flying towards their predetermined target for a while.
However, studying was a more challenging task; it required his personal attention.
After all, you can’t just leave your brain on the desk and expect it to learn on its own.
The human brain, it seems, is still not quite mature.
Fortunately, the first year didn’t involve too many specialized courses. Instead, there were more general education classes, which is why Jiang Qin dared to skip classes, skirting on the edge of the rules.
The first class in the afternoon was Microeconomics, a combined class for both the third and fourth sections.
The classroom was noisy before the lesson began.
Groups of students chatted in twos and threes, gossiping about who confessed to whom, which celebrity was holding a concert, or commenting on how white a girl’s legs looked, dismissing it as just leggings.
This was typical college life, where students discussed mundane matters and only paid attention to those around them, unlike Jiang Qin, whose life was hectic, busier than even the university president.
At this moment, amidst the crowd, there was a girl who seemed out of place.
She wore a white hoodie and sat near the window, her eyes bright and calm, quietly indifferent to the outside world, flipping through her textbook in a seemingly absent-minded manner.
Sunlight streamed in from the window, casting a patch on her desk and another on the floor.
Many boys around her chatted about their own topics, yet their glances often fell on her, stealing a look before quickly looking away, feeling a secret satisfaction.
Jiang Qin entered from the back door of the classroom and quietly sat behind her. From his angle, slightly tilting his head to the right, he could see her smooth, jade-like face and delicate, curly eyelashes.
To others, her cool demeanor was perceived differently by him – as a kind of naive and silly cuteness.
“Look, Jiang Qin is back.”
“They really broke up, not sitting together anymore. The rumors are true!”
“How could he dare to do that to Feng Nanshu, who’s so pretty!”
“Men are like that. No matter how beautiful a girl is, they’ll get tired of her one day!”
Jiang Qin frowned slightly, thinking to himself that even when he was not around, there were absurd rumors about him everywhere.
It felt like a web novel author who usually worked from home and decided to go out one day, only to be surrounded by neighbors asking if he was the rumored freeloader.
It was annoying. He was actually working hard to support his family! (lmao Author talking about himself here)
Meanwhile, Feng Nanshu seemed to catch her name in the chatter. She looked up attentively for a moment, then, realizing her name was no longer being mentioned, quietly lowered her head back to her book.
“Feng Nanshu, I bet you were just thinking about Jiang Qin. How about a dinner bet?!”
Gao Wenhui snapped Feng Nanshu’s book shut, her gaze intense as she stared at the beautiful face. Lately, she enjoyed this game, because with the male protagonist absent, they needed something else to tease about for a balanced diet.
“I wasn’t. I was reading.”
Feng Nanshu sat upright, her cherry-red lips moving as she denied harboring thoughts of him.
“Then tell me what was on the page you were just reading. Just a sentence will do. If you do, I’ll believe you.”
Gao Wenhui narrowed her eyes, her piercing gaze as if seeing through everything.
“…”
Feng Nanshu paused, realizing she couldn’t recall, then grudgingly pulled her book back and started flipping through it.
In the activities undertaken by the person Jiang Qin, all actions are aimed at achieving the greatest benefit at the least Jiang Qin cost.
Feng Nanshu appeared somewhat bewildered, a trace of confusion flickering in her eyes.
Why was Jiang Qin’s name written all over this book?
“Wenhui, I’ll treat you to dinner later,” Feng Nanshu offered.
“No, unless you admit you’re thinking about him, even if I jump from here, I won’t eat your dinner,” Gao Wenhui retorted.
Overhearing their conversation, Jiang Qin couldn’t help but reach out and gently pat Feng Nanshu’s shoulder.
Feng Nanshu, with a puzzled look in her eyes, turned around. Upon seeing Jiang Qin, she seemed momentarily startled. Her beautiful eyes blinked lightly, and then the corners of her mouth gradually lifted, brightening her gaze like the clear skies after a rain.
“Jiang Qin, let’s go for a walk.”
“After class.”
Feng Nanshu pursed her lips, a hint of stubbornness flashing in her eyes: “I haven’t gone out with you for a walk in days.”
Jiang Qin patted the empty seat beside him, his eyes showing a tenderness he himself hadn’t noticed.
At this moment, Gao Wenhui, lying on her desk, was gazing blankly at the blackboard, thinking of another way to probe into Feng Nanshu’s stormy inner world hidden beneath her calm exterior. But when she turned back, they were gone.
Huh?
She looked around and suddenly noticed that Jiang Qin had arrived.
Feng Nanshu, true to her naive nature, immediately followed him and sat in the back row with him.
“Jiang Qin, you still remember to come back, huh? Do you know Feng Nanshu has been soulless these past few days?” Gao Wenhui, always ready to stand up for others, commented.
Jiang Qin turned to Feng Nanshu: “Little rich lady, where did your soul go?”
“It went for a stroll,” Feng Nanshu responded, half-jokingly.
“With whom?”
Feng Nanshu lifted her gaze: “With a boy who climbs trees like a bear.”
“?????”
“Exactly, that’s what I want to see, sweet and sour. Hey, handsome guy in the back, let’s swap places. I want a direct confrontation.”
Gao Wenhui, excitedly banging on the desk, stood up and swapped seats with Cao Guangyu, who was sitting behind Jiang Qin.
Cao had arrived after Jiang Qin, so Jiang Qin was unaware of his presence behind him.
Moreover, Cao Guangyu originally didn’t want to change seats, but hearing the word ‘handsome’ made it hard for him to refuse. He came over quietly, pulling at his collar, looking very low-key, without the arrogance typical of the unremarkable Young Master Cao.
Jiang Qin was puzzled by his silence and even more so by his low profile.
Being called handsome and still keeping quiet?
Typically, he would have loudly responded, “What did you call me? I didn’t hear it, say it again, louder!”
“Old Cao, why didn’t you say something when you arrived?”
“Hello, Old Jiang,” Cao Guangyu replied perfunctorily. “You haven’t been back to the dorm for so long, everyone thought you were dead.”
Jiang Qin spat in his direction, his attention then turning to Cao’s hand pulling at his collar: “What’s with your neck? Why are you covering it? Did a zombie bite you?”
“It’s nothing, just a stiff neck. I put a plaster on it.”
Jiang Qin didn’t believe a word, knowing that a plaster didn’t need to be hidden under a collar: “Show me, I promise I won’t tell anyone.”
“You promise?” Cao Guangyu hesitated.
“I promise.”
Cao Guangyu fell silent for a moment, then lowered his collar, revealing several similarly sized red patches on the left side of his neck.
These patches were distinctive, mostly narrow at the ends and wider in the middle, resembling lip marks.
Jiang Qin held his breath: “You got a girlfriend?”
“Um…” Cao Guangyu showed the shyness unique to an innocent boy.
“Damn, I’ve only been gone a few days, and you’ve rocketed ahead so fast?”
“It’s just how it happened, some things can’t be controlled. Don’t tell anyone, Old Jiang. Ren Ziqiang and Old Zhou still don’t know,” Cao Guangyu said nonchalantly.
Jiang Qin couldn’t understand, knowing too well what kind of person Cao was.
If Cao had a girlfriend, he would certainly be boasting about it everywhere: “Look, I’ve got a girlfriend now, do you?”
But Cao Guangyu’s unusual reticence seemed suspicious, as if he had something he dared not reveal.
Jiang Qin considered the possibility that Cao had faked the marks himself to show off but was now feeling guilty and hesitant to flaunt it.
“Don’t worry, I won’t tell them, but you have to keep it to yourself too,” Jiang Qin reassured him.
Meanwhile, Feng Nanshu, who had been somewhat clueless all this while, suddenly looked alarmed: “Jiang Qin, how did this happen?”
Jiang Qin coughed and joked: “It’s a disease that affects people who constantly think about love. Some people are reserved, so it appears later, but for some fierce ones, it happens on the first day.”
What nonsense!
Gao Wenhui, listening from behind, was baffled by Jiang Qin’s outrageous explanation. Though she wanted to object, she couldn’t find a flaw in his logic. Indeed, some showed signs late while others were swift, nothing technically incorrect there.
After a while, Ren Ziqiang and Zhou Chao also arrived in the classroom, always timing their entrance to the minute, as if coming a minute early would be a loss.
“Old Jiang? You’re back?”
Upon seeing Jiang Qin, the two greeted him warmly and then sat next to Cao Guangyu, bombarding him with questions about the quality of beauties at University of Science and Technology.
Jiang Qin responded without a hint of emotion but realized something.
Cao had come to class alone, indicating he hadn’t left the dorm with Ren Ziqiang and Zhou Chao. This meant he must have just come from a date and directly headed to the classroom.
So, the kiss marks on his neck weren’t self-inflicted but genuinely acquired.
Damn, the first one in the dorm to break free from singlehood was Cao Guangyu.
But it was strange; why wasn’t he showing off?
“Old Cao, what’s with your neck?” Zhou Chao also noticed the mark.
Cao Guangyu coughed: “You have to promise not to tell anyone.”
“No problem, we won’t tell a soul.”
Cao hesitated for a moment before lowering his collar again.
Jiang Qin laughed, thinking, “That’s the real Cao Guangyu, never one to hide his light under a bushel. He just changed his tactics!”
Seeing the envious looks from Zhou Chao and Ren Ziqiang, a hint of pride flashed in Cao’s eyes before he modestly covered his neck again.
This was probably a case of ‘you’re influenced by the company you keep.’
Jiang Qin knew Cao had indeed learned a thing or two about showing off from him.
“Which department is your girlfriend from? Bring her out for us to meet!” they urged.
Cao Guangyu pondered: “Let’s have dinner together in a couple of days, and you all can meet her then.”
“As if you need to tell us, now that you’re together, you must treat us to a meal,” Zhou Chao said, his enthusiasm for free meals evident.
Meanwhile, Feng Nanshu quietly observed the kiss marks on Cao Guangyu’s neck, then glanced at Jiang Qin’s neck, her expression becoming thoughtful. (oh dam)
Chapter 125: Eating, Sleeping, and Looking at Photos
TL: Etude
Perhaps it was because he hadn’t attended a proper class for a long time, but Jiang Qin was brimming with energy and had adjusted both his mind and body to a learning mode. He planned to pay close attention to the class, but within three minutes, he smoothly reverted to a state of casual observation.
During those barely focused three minutes, one minute was spent with the teacher dilly-dallying, and another minute was taken up by roll call.
Jiang Qin felt a bit of retrospective fear.
It was fortunate that he had started trying his hand at business right after his rebirth.
Otherwise, given his current learning ability and level of concentration, he was bound to fail sooner or later.
Turning his head, he looked at Feng Nanshu. She was sucking on her pale, delicate hand with her cherry-red lips. After a moment, she removed her hand, leaving some clear saliva on it, but not leaving any obvious marks.
She stared blankly for a while, a hint of confusion flashing in her eyes.
“What are you doing?” Jiang Qin asked, somewhat dazed.
Feng Nanshu looked up at him. “Jiang Qin, what shall we eat after class?”
“Anything is fine, it’s up to you.”
“Then let’s have beef brisket noodles, it sounds nice.”
After Feng Nanshu finished speaking, she wiped the saliva off the back of her hand and began to listen attentively to the lecture.
Jiang Qin, resting his chin in his hand, began to watch her. He realized that if he forgot his past memories or the incident where he accidentally kicked her leg in the library, he would never consider this little rich lady as a silly cutie. Instead, he would see her as a stunningly beautiful and aloof goddess.
She was tall and slender, with fair skin, delicate features, and a graceful figure, embodying all the traits of a wealthy beauty. Yet, she was clingy, which was adorably contrasting.
After two classes, the teacher announced the end of the lesson and left the classroom.
“Old Zhou, take my books back to the dorm for me!”
Cao Guangyu handed his books to Zhou Chao and hurried out of the classroom. It was obvious he was rushing for a date.
A young man newly in love behaves like this, feeling that every second not spent in romance is a severe waste of life. This is often referred to as ‘love-struck,’ especially in the case of someone like Cao Guangyu, who dreamt of having a girlfriend, the condition was particularly severe.
Jiang Qin looked down on Cao Guangyu a bit, believing that spending time strengthening friendships was more worthwhile.
So, he planned to spend the afternoon and evening with Feng Nanshu.
He would take her for dinner, then for a walk around the campus, and finally sit by the lake.
However, plans always change. Just as he was leaving the classroom, Lu Guangrong came to him personally, inviting him to the office for a chat.
“You go back to the dorm and wait for me, I’ll come to pick you up after I’m done.”
After saying this, Jiang Qin headed towards the office.
“No, I want to follow you. The obedient kind.”
Feng Nanshu followed him out of the classroom, almost inseparable. Her shoes, with a slight heel, made a particularly crisp sound on the floor.
Jiang Qin felt he couldn’t refuse.
Such a big, beautiful, cute, best friend, so well-behaved and quiet. Why wouldn’t you take her with you? What reason could there be not to?
“Don’t worry, I won’t run away.”
“I won’t talk, I’ll just follow.”
Feng Nanshu said earnestly, then followed Jiang Qin all the way to the office.
Lu Guangrong didn’t call Jiang Qin for anything else but for the matter mentioned by Zhang Ming’an, about the Linchuan Youth Daily interviewing entrepreneurial college students and participants in the Work-Study program.
Separately, neither of these titles was significant enough to be featured in the Linchuan Youth Daily, but together, they became interesting.
A freshman who started a business right after entering university, also providing positions to motivate impoverished students to participate in work-study programs. Apart from academic labels, Jiang Qin’s list of achievements was almost fully stacked.
The Youth Newspaper was working on a feature about youth in the new era, and Jiang Qin, who suddenly emerged, fit their narrative perfectly.
Some slogans should not just be chanted; they are too vague. Setting up a model individual makes them seem much more real.
Lu Guangrong had heard a bit about Jiang Qin’s website, but only a bit.
Like most university advisors, he rarely appeared unless there was an urgent matter. After all, he had countless meetings to attend, reports to write, and research to conduct, keeping him dizzyingly busy.
So, when the head of the school’s publicity department told him that the Linchuan Youth Daily wanted to interview one of his students, he was utterly baffled.
In just two and a half months, this kid had made such a big name for himself?
“I expected to hear your name in school scandals, but never thought I’d hear it from Director Gu of the publicity department. It scared me at first.”
Lu Guangrong’s impression of Jiang Qin wasn’t deep, with the most memorable being the night of the school’s opening when he was in the dormitory, hugging his laptop and chatting animatedly with five or six girls.
“I just slept in class, it couldn’t have reached the publicity department, could it? Teacher, are you planning to make me famous?”
Jiang Qin had heard of highlighting exemplary students in learning and entrepreneurship, but never for sleeping. If this got out, it would be somewhat embarrassing.
“That’s not it. The reason I called you is because the Linchuan Youth Daily wants to give you a special interview. It’s a good thing, something others can’t even hope for.”
Lu Guangrong handed over a printed A4 paper: “These are the interview questions they sent. Go back and prepare well, it’s best to draft some answers.”
Interviews about good deeds are always prepared in advance, questions and answers both. Only interviews about bad deeds are impromptu. Serious media and paparazzi are different; interviews are not the goal, publicity is.
“When does the interview start?”
“Tomorrow afternoon at one, on the third floor of the Guang Teaching Center, room A302. You can go there yourself.”
Jiang Qin took the A4 paper and glanced at it.
As Lu Guangrong said, being interviewed was indeed a good thing. Having the official media like the Youth Newspaper as a credit endorsement would help Jiang Qin’s future business image.
He didn’t really want to be famous, but no one likes to collaborate with someone unknown, so getting used to such scenarios early would benefit his work later.
“Teacher Lu, it’s my first time being interviewed, and I’m a bit nervous, afraid I might say something wrong. Could you teach me how to answer?”
Student Union President Zhu Feng, who was working in the office, couldn’t help but speak up: “What’s so difficult about that? If they ask about your ideals, say you want to be a youth of the new era, aspiring and upward, realizing dreams, contributing to society. If they ask about your development, say you want to help more impoverished students, help more people complete their education, becoming talents useful to the country.”
After hearing this, Jiang Qin gave a thumbs up: “Sister Zhu truly deserves to be the president of the Student Union, these years of student work really weren’t in vain.”
Zhu Feng, a bit proud, straightened her back even more, but her face still maintained a serious and earnest demeanor.
“Jiang Qin, regardless of whether you’re dating or starting a business, just don’t fail any courses, otherwise it would be embarrassing.”
Lu Guangrong couldn’t help but add this, glancing meaningfully at the well-behaved Feng Nanshu sitting nearby.
Business thriving, a girlfriend beautiful as a fairy, and now a newspaper feature. Jiang Qin really had some skills.
After a while, Jiang Qin left with Feng Nanshu. Zhu Feng muttered, “How did this guy start his business? The questions he asked were so silly.”
Lu Guangrong took a sip of tea and spoke unhurriedly, “If he could get Professor Yan’s referral and convince the University of Science and Technology to let him expand his business, he must be quite articulate. Do you really think he doesn’t know what to say?”
“Ah? Then why did he ask?”
“He asked, you answered, he thanked, and now aren’t you happy?”
Zhu Feng froze for a moment, taking five seconds to realize.
Jiang Qin’s question wasn’t important; what mattered was his flattering comment at the end. It made him seem humble while making others feel good, gaining their favor instantly. She even felt good about herself for a moment, even somewhat triumphant, and started to care less about his refusal to join the Student Union.
“Is he really that cunning?” Zhu Feng was a bit incredulous.
“Not at all cunning. People who are adept in social interactions often appear foolish, acting like they’re naive and wealthy, pretending to know nothing and eagerly seeking collaboration. In reality, they’re extremely astute.”
As Lu Guangrong spoke, he was reminded of a new teacher who had once joined the Finance Department. During a team-building activity at a seafood restaurant, this teacher had held up a crab, asking the old dean how to eat it and if he could have a hammer to crack it open. The old dean, amused, personally demonstrated how to open the crab shell.
Later, everyone learned that this teacher’s family had been fishermen for three generations.
But what did that matter?
After that incident, every time the old dean ate seafood, he would think of that teacher first. Within two years, the teacher had left the office. (promoted)
But Lu Guangrong was curious. At Jiang Qin’s age, one would expect him to be arrogant and defiant. How could he manage such a level of detail in his interactions? If it weren’t for the crab incident, even Lu Guangrong might not have seen through Jiang Qin’s feigned ignorance.
Could it be that some people are truly born with a talent for this?
Meanwhile, in the second cafeteria,
Jiang Qin and Feng Nanshu were already enjoying their steaming, oily beef brisket noodles.
The little rich lady, who usually couldn’t eat spicy food but loved it, had her lips reddened from the spice, with tiny beads of sweat forming on her nose.
“What did you do while I was gone these past few days?”
Jiang Qin picked up a piece of brisket with his chopsticks and held it to Feng Nanshu’s mouth.
“Eating, sleeping, attending classes, and sometimes going to the supermarket with Gao Wenhui.”
The little rich lady opened her reddened mouth obediently and ate the piece of brisket, her eyes shimmering like water.
“Besides eating, sleeping, and attending classes?”
“Lying in bed looking at photos.”
Jiang Qin paused for a moment: “Oh, the photos from the team building, right? Lu Xuemei’s photography skills are quite good.”
He had been in a rush that day and hadn’t looked closely at the album. His memory was still fixed on the photo of himself and Feng Nanshu, unaware of another photo in the album showing a bear climbing a tree to steal honey. He also didn’t know that the little rich lady had already imagined everything from those photos.
They had been apart for a whole week, seeing each other only a few times. It was by looking at those photos that the little rich lady had managed to endure the separation.
Chapter 126: Learning to Kiss
TL: Etude
“Take off your shoes.”
At night, the surface of Moonwatch Lake shimmered with waves.
Jiang Qin was sitting with Feng Nanshu on the stone boat pavilion, attempting to solidify the profound friendship between him and the young wealthy woman in a sincere and simple manner.
In some European countries, people enjoy the cheek-kissing greeting, even in important settings like diplomacy and political discussions. This social etiquette is a way to demonstrate closeness; the old rule is to kiss on the cheek, which greatly shortens the distance between people.
Jiang Qin was different; he preferred the foot massage greeting.
Feng Nanshu, well-versed in etiquette, bent her legs on the stone pavilion, hooked her fingers around her shoes to gently remove them, and then took off her socks, folding them neatly before stuffing them into her shoes. She extended her smooth, jade-like feet to the designated spot.
Then, the two casually chatted, not continuously but in breaks.
Jiang Qin had been busy with work-study matters at the University of Science and Technology these past few days. His speech carried an official tone, and since he lacked experience in charming girls, the conversation, though deep, wasn’t very interesting.
Any other girl would probably roll her eyes at him, calling him a boring man.
But Feng Nanshu loved listening. The gleam in her eyes was softer and more radiant than the moonlit lake, as if what Jiang Qin said was the most interesting thing in the world.
“Jiang Qin, there’s a fish.”
“Really? I forgot to bring some bread or something. Use your foot to feed it.”
Jiang Qin playfully extended her delicate foot into the water, causing the little rich lady to struggle in a panic, almost stuffing his mouth in the process.
After a while, rustling sounds came from the opposite bushes, as if something was moving towards the lake.
Both Jiang Qin and Feng Nanshu turned their attention, holding their breath in anticipation, and then saw a familiar face.
Cao Guangyu.
He was walking hand in hand with a girl towards a large stone by the lake, only about ten meters away from where they were. The girl had long hair, about 1.65 meters tall, carrying a bag on her shoulder and holding something in her hand, which she kept feeding to Cao Guangyu.
Cao, led by her like a weak chicken, ate whatever she fed him, looking somewhat amusing.
“Old Cao, that guy, is quite affectionate, feeding her like that, tsk tsk, so sour.”
“But why are they here at Moonwatch Lake instead of the Maple Forest?”
Jiang Qin found the scene odd because most young couples in love would choose the Maple Forest over Moonwatch Lake. The forest lacked lights, which made it ideal for some privacy, and the lakeside had more mosquitoes due to its proximity to water.
Jiang Qin brought Feng Nanshu here instead of the Maple Forest to prevent her from getting curious about kissing.
She was the type to learn everything quickly and well.
If they went to the Maple Forest, where they would inevitably see couples kissing, she might become curious about how it felt.
That wouldn’t be good, as such curiosity could spoil their friendship.
But in the next second, something under the night sky did spoil.
The girl sitting over ten meters away suddenly grabbed Cao Guangyu, and without a word, kissed him.
Jiang Qin was startled, thinking to himself, “Are young people nowadays this bold?”
It felt like a decent man was being corrupted right before his eyes.
“Darn, no wonder Old Cao didn’t go to the Maple Forest. Turns out he’s the one being pursued!”
At this moment, Feng Nanshu was also staring blankly at the scene, her pretty face filled with curiosity, her delicate and curled eyelashes trembling with each heartbeat.
In the comic “Magic Eyed Girl,” there was a brown-haired werewolf that liked to pounce on its prey, pin them down, and use its sharp teeth to cut through their throats, just like what the girl had just done. But the werewolf hunted for food, for survival, unlike these two, who seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves!
One second, two seconds, three seconds passed, and the situation on the other side grew more intense. Cao Guangyu looked like a small boat in a rough sea, trembling visibly.
After a moment, the little rich lady turned to Jiang Qin, her eyes sparkling with a daring curiosity.
“Jiang Qin, can we do that too?”
“We can’t!” Jiang Qin spoke with firm conviction.
“Why not?” Feng Nanshu asked with a pout.
Jiang Qin covered her eyes with his hand, fearing Cao Guangyu and his companion might escalate their actions, but he continued to explain, “That’s something couples do. As friends, our emotions should stop at the feet. Going beyond that is too much. Have you forgotten what I told you before? Turning friends into lovers often ends with them not talking to each other ever again. Don’t you want to be friends with me forever?”
“I do.”
“Then behave, pretend you didn’t see anything.”
Feng Nanshu fell silent for a while before quietly looking at him, “Just once, you won’t tell, and neither will I. We’ll still be friends. I just want to know what it feels like.”
“Heh, self-deception,” Jiang Qin didn’t believe her.
“Not at all.”
“You said the same when you begged for cotton candy. How many did you end up eating? I saw at least five. Can you really say just once?”
Feng Nanshu: “…”
“It’s not possible.”
Jiang Qin looked at Feng Nanshu’s full and rosy lips. His heart was pounding fiercely, and though it was incredibly hard to say, he maintained a calm exterior.
Some things are like caged beasts, appearing tame and harmless, but once released, they become uncontrollable and unstoppable.
It reminded him of his second uncle’s cousin, who, despite being in the senior class, still wet his pants. When questioned at home, they couldn’t understand why he didn’t just raise his hand to go to the bathroom. The cousin explained it was a life hack he learned from his desk-mate: to urinate a little, hold it, then a little more, to last till the end of class.
When asked if he couldn’t hold it, the cousin, in tears, said he couldn’t even pinch it shut.
Therefore, some things are best not tried. Once the floodgates open, the torrent is unstoppable.
“Let’s go, we’re not watching this.”
“Okay.”
After a while, Jiang Qin gently helped Feng Nanshu put on her socks and shoes, and escorted her away from the “crime scene” back to her dormitory.
When he returned to the boys’ dormitory, Cao Guangyu also leisurely made his way back, his lips curled in an unmistakable smile, radiant with the glow of someone deeply in love.
“Old Jiang, staying in the dorm tonight?”
Jiang Qin, with a cold expression, replied, “Went out for a romantic date, did you? How did it feel?”
Zhou Chao and Ren Ziqiang suddenly sat up in their beds with a rumble. “Come on, Old Cao, tell us about your love life. What did you guys do?”
“We didn’t do much, just strolled around, chatted, enjoyed some romantic moments, pretty much like what you see in TV dramas.”
“Just walking and talking?”
Cao Guangyu felt it was his duty as the first one in the dorm to get a girlfriend to enlighten his brothers on love-related matters, partly to satisfy his own pride.
What was most crucial?
He was finally one step ahead of Jiang Qin, having the upper hand to show off.
However, he was a bit embarrassed to admit he was the one being kissed forcefully. Instead, he casually unbuttoned his shirt to reveal a patch of red ‘strawberry’ marks, as if they were medals of honor.
Sure enough, Zhou Chao and Ren Ziqiang looked envious, giving Cao Guangyu a thrill of satisfaction.
Zhou Chao’s pursuit of Yanzi was too elusive, not even a feather touched, let alone a ‘strawberry’.
Ren Ziqiang was in a worse state, thinking that becoming sworn siblings with Pan Xiu would lead to some romantic progress, only to find himself buying milk tea more often without crossing any boundaries.
So seeing Cao Guangyu’s neck covered with marks of love, they couldn’t help but feel envious.
But when Cao Guangyu looked back, he saw a hint of contempt in Jiang Qin’s eyes.
“Old Jiang, what’s with that look? Are you just sour because you can’t get any? Why don’t you get Feng Nanshu to give you a bite?”
“Heh.” Jiang Qin smirked coldly, saying nothing.
Cao Guangyu, sitting confidently, said, “Actually, I don’t really like clingy types, but I can’t help it; my girlfriend is too cute, always sticking to me.”
“Old Cao, I took Feng Nanshu to the lakeside tonight, and we saw a girl kissing a guy, who was so scared he didn’t dare to move, almost whimpering. Pure innocence.”
“…”
Seeing Cao Guangyu’s expression change, Jiang Qin revealed a smile, thinking, “Take that. Got a girlfriend and thought you could outshine me? Wishful thinking.”
Then he sat at the desk, pulling out the interview questions given by Lu Guangrong, quickly forming an outline in his mind.
Question: What was your purpose in starting a business as soon as you entered college?
Answer: To train myself, help my classmates, achieve my dreams, and give back to society.
Question: What have you gained from starting a business?
Answer: I gained confidence and courage. I feel like I have fulfilled the value of my youth and achieved inner fulfillment.
Question: What should you do when you face setbacks in your entrepreneurial journey?
Answer: Don’t be afraid of setbacks. Be brave and proactive.
Question: Who should you be most thankful for on your entrepreneurial journey?
Answer: First, I’m grateful for the country’s support for college students’ entrepreneurship, then for Linchuan University, Professor Yan from the Entrepreneurship Center, the University of Science and Technology, Hu Maolin the head of the Youth League Committee, Vice-Director of the School Office Zhang Ming’an…
This thank-you list could be a bit longer, more detailed, mentioning everyone who should be and even those who shouldn’t be. As for how many names would make it into the newspaper, that was beyond Jiang Qin’s control.
The basic approach was just like this, not too difficult, and almost no different from what Zhu Feng had said.
Jiang Qin slapped the manuscript on the table, his nose twitching at the sour smell in the dormitory, only to turn back and see Cao Guangyu holding his phone, his face soft and tender.
Chapter 127: Interview with Qingnian Daily
TL: Etude
The Guang Teaching Center, officially known as the Broadcasting Education Center, is part of the school’s Propaganda Department, also referred to as the News Center. The entire building is located in the eastern campus.
The following day, at noon, a chill autumn wind was stirring.
After lunch, Jiang Qin drove to the eastern campus and found a parking spot.
He wasn’t familiar with the security staff at this campus and couldn’t park his car just anywhere like he did at his own department, so he tried to keep a low profile.
After parking, Jiang Qin checked the time. It was only twelve o’clock, and there was still an hour before the interview.
He guessed that room A302 wouldn’t be open yet.
Deciding to wait in his car, Jiang Qin unbuckled his seatbelt and played the game Snake. While doing so, an interesting thought struck him.
He had always claimed to be single.
Yet, his car hardly looked like that of a bachelor’s.
In the front storage compartment of the armrest, there were hair ties used by Feng Nanshu for her ponytails, a pair of her sunglasses, and a black bow she once took off, all lying there.
Moreover, there was a hand-knitted wool bag he had bought for her during a team building exercise.
Opening the storage box, Jiang Qin also found the little rich lady’s lipstick, a small mirror, a folding comb, and… a pack of sanitary pads.
“Feng Nanshu, this little devil, is slowly invading my life,” he muttered to himself, closing the storage box and leaning back in his seat, his expression gradually becoming thoughtful.
At twelve-forty, Jiang Qin got out of the car, locked it, and entered the Guang Teaching building. He climbed the stairs to the third floor and arrived at room A302.
This room, resembling a studio, was spacious and equipped with several flashlights, a Sony camera, and four stacked televisions.
In the center of the room, two black sofas were placed, one occupied by a short-haired woman with a dignified aura. She was wearing a work badge from Linchuan Youth Daily and was reading a paper.
Next to her stood a man in a dark green vest and a baseball cap, with a Nikon camera hanging around his neck.
Without asking, it was clear that these were the journalists from Linchuan Youth Daily, looking just like the reporters one sees on TV.
However…
When Jiang Qin’s gaze returned, he unexpectedly noticed a familiar face.
She wore a white dress with a literary vibe, her smooth, long hair draped over her shoulders. She was looking at him with sparkling eyes, biting her lip unconsciously.
Strangely enough, she wasn’t yelling or showing the world-owes-me expression she usually had. Instead, she stood quietly, not making a sound for a long time.
“Jiang Qin?”
The short-haired female journalist suddenly noticed him, approached with a smile, and extended her right hand: “Hello, I’m Dong Min, a reporter from Linchuan Youth Daily. Thank you for agreeing to our interview.”
Jiang Qin shifted his gaze from the familiar face and shook hands with the journalist: “I should be thanking Linchuan Youth Daily for interviewing an ordinary college student like me.”
“You’re anything but ordinary with the achievements you’ve made in just two months of college,” Dong Min replied with a smile, though she was slightly surprised inside.
This eighteen-year-old young man knew how to give a soft handshake, quite different from the college students she had interviewed before who would grip firmly and not let go.
The interview went smoothly and seamlessly, just as Jiang Qin had prepared the night before. He answered every question fluidly.
Although Jiang Qin had never been formally interviewed in his past life, dealing with such a small occasion was not a problem for him. With the soul of a 38-year-old, he was not flustered. Whether it was about entrepreneurship, work-study programs, or dreams, he could speak eloquently even without a script, thanks to his years of experience in social settings.
Several questions in, Dong Min’s appraisal of Jiang Qin only grew higher.
It’s rare for a freshman in college to be composed during a formal media interview, but Jiang Qin was genuinely relaxed.
“My entrepreneurial achievements are not solely mine. Without the support of the school, the guidance of teachers, and the support of everyone, Zhihu would not be what it is today, nor would I have the privilege to be the person I am now.”
“Let me conclude with this,” he said.
“There’s no such thing as peaceful times by default. It’s the party, the country, our schools, and teachers who bear the burdens on our behalf.”
With his voice deliberately lowered for effect, Jiang Qin’s statement resonated deeply with Dong Min. She quickly scribbled it down, despite having recorded the conversation, as if afraid she would forget this impactful line.
In an era dominated by non-mainstream quotes, such a powerful statement was unheard of.
“Can I use that last statement as the headline for this news piece?” she asked.
“Of course,” Jiang Qin casually agreed, thinking to himself about the potential impact of his words.
Meanwhile, Chu Siqi, standing nearby, watched Jiang Qin with a complex expression. A hint of faint, yet poignant sadness flickered through her. She had recently joined the news center because of her reputation as the most beautiful girl in the school. Director Gu planned to train her as the deputy head of the reporter station, representing Linchuan University in interviews. Her beauty alone was a credit to the school.
Linchuan University had a journalism department, and the head of the station would undoubtedly be from there, but having a beautiful deputy head like her was also beneficial.
However, Chu Siqi hadn’t expected her first interaction to be with a journalist from Linchuan Youth Daily, nor did she expect that journalist to be interviewing Jiang Qin.
This meeting was different from their encounter on the train. For the first time, she looked at him without her usual capriciousness and tantrums. It was also her first time seeing Jiang Qin speak so eloquently.
He was completely different from their high school days.
In terms of speech, demeanor, and posture, he far surpassed their peers.
He was mature and confident, flamboyant but not arrogant.
Chu Siqi realized that she was once only a step away from him, but now he seemed unreachably distant.
Apart from a brief look of surprise when he first entered, he didn’t glance at her throughout the interview. There was no deliberate avoidance, just a natural indifference.
He truly didn’t care anymore, not even bothering to harbor resentment. Chu Siqi felt that this indifference was what hurt her the most.
“Jiang Qin, please sit up straight. I’ll take a photo for the news article,” the photographer requested.
Jiang Qin adjusted his position: “Is this okay?”
“Yes, that’s fine.”
After the photographer captured the image and showed it to Dong Min, she nodded in approval: “That’s perfect, thank you again, Jiang. I must say, you’re the most mature-thinking student I’ve ever met.”
“Dong Teacher, you’re the most beautiful journalist I’ve ever seen,” Jiang Qin complimented, not sure what else to say but knowing that complimenting a woman’s appearance was usually a safe bet.
Dong Min smiled and mentioned she had to head to the main campus for another interview with a third-year student who had found and returned a lost item. She had wanted to do the interview earlier but couldn’t due to lack of staff, so she planned to conduct it now.
As the interview concluded, Jiang Qin asked, “How are you planning to get there?”
“We came by taxi, so we’ll have to walk,” Dong Min replied, slinging her bag over her shoulder.
“I’m also heading back to the main campus. Would you like a ride in my car?” Jiang Qin offered. He felt it would be a waste not to extend this easy act of kindness. Regardless of any future benefits, it was good to offer help first.
“Really? That would be great, thank you,” Dong Min expressed her surprise, realizing that despite his modesty, this 18-year-old had the means to own a car. Thinking of the background information she had gathered and his advertising revenue, it made sense. Earning over half a million a month, owning a car was trivial for him.
Chu Siqi, standing behind Dong Min, turned slightly pale, sighing inwardly. The rumors she had read online about him buying a car were true.
“Chu, you should come with us too,” Dong Min suggested.
“Can I?” Chu Siqi responded, surprised.
“Our director and yours are old friends. She specifically asked you to follow the entire process, to understand the different interviewing styles with different interviewees,” Dong Min explained.
Chu Siqi immediately nodded in agreement, secretly looking forward to riding in Jiang Qin’s car. She didn’t understand why, but she was genuinely excited.
Internally sighing, Jiang Qin thought, ‘Why didn’t this journalist Dong mention this earlier? If she had, I wouldn’t have offered them a ride in my old car.’ But having already offered, he couldn’t refuse now. It would seem petty to not let Chu Siqi join, and he couldn’t risk her causing a scene.
Without saying a word, Jiang Qin left room A302, followed by Dong Min and the photographer, with Chu Siqi quietly trailing behind.
Her previously commanding attitude was completely gone. In front of Jiang Qin now, she had lost all her former confidence.
After a while, Jiang Qin drove his Audi out of the parking spot and invited everyone to get in. Chu Siqi hesitated and didn’t dare to sit in the front passenger seat, instead sliding into the back row along with the photographer. Dong Min joined them in the back seat.
“Is it too cramped?” Jiang Qin asked.
“It’s fine, let’s just squeeze in. Wouldn’t want your girlfriend to get jealous,” Dong Min joked, noticing the feminine accessories in the car, especially the black bow.
Jiang Qin chuckled at her comment, wondering if Feng Nanshu even knew what jealousy was.
“……”
“…Wait, am I thinking too much?” he pondered to himself.
Meanwhile, Chu Siqi, observing Jiang Qin through the rearview mirror, couldn’t help but feel a tinge of melancholy cross her expression.
Chapter 128: Very Obedient and Clingy
TL: Etude
Driving from the East Campus to the main campus, Jiang Qin steered the car single-handedly, ensuring a smooth and comfortable ride.
In the back seat, Dong Min, the photographer, and Chu Siqi sat in silence, creating a somewhat quiet and eventually awkward atmosphere, particularly in the confined space of the car. This made everyone feel uneasy.
To break the silence, Dong Min started asking Chu Siqi about her hometown and if she had a boyfriend.
Chu Siqi responded that she was single and from Jizhou. While speaking, she glanced at Jiang Qin in the driver’s seat, noticing him rolling down the window to greet a security guard at the main campus and casually snatching two jujubes from the guard’s hand.
“Jiang Qin, where is your girlfriend from?” Dong Min asked.
After wiping the jujubes on his clothes and taking a bite, Jiang Qin replied, “I wouldn’t dare share such details with a big reporter like Dong Min. If I become successful in business in the future, my past relationships could become scandalous material.”
Dong Min laughed at his remark, “I am a professional journalist, not a paparazzo for a gossip magazine. I won’t affect your reputation.”
“I have never been afraid of impacting my own reputation,” Jiang Qin said, his smile fading as he slowed the car down to enter a pedestrian lane.
Dong Min was momentarily puzzled but then understood his meaning. He wasn’t afraid of his own reputation being affected; he was worried about his girlfriend being impacted.
Heh, he’s quite protective.
Despite being a journalist for the serious and formal Linchuan Youth Daily, Dong Min, who interviewed hundreds or even thousands of people annually, rarely got to hear any juicy gossip. Also, Jiang Qin’s mature yet not dull demeanor, his steadiness combined with humor, and his ability to charm others easily made him a likely candidate for having many romantic encounters. Such individuals often turn out to be womanizers.
Even if he wasn’t a womanizer, he would definitely not allow a girl to leave her belongings in his car, as it would be akin to marking territory and declaring ownership.
Unless he truly liked her and indulged her.
This made Dong Min even more curious about what kind of girl could captivate such a versatile man.
“Jiang, let’s not discuss details, just tell me where she’s from. That wouldn’t reveal who she is, right?”
Jiang Qin, avoiding a stray cat by gently pressing the brakes, replied, “She’s from our area as well.”
Dong Min was surprised, “High school classmates? Continuing a relationship from high school to university is indeed rare.”
Jiang Qin inwardly thought, why is the whole world so interested in whether I’m in a relationship or not? Are they all matchmakers trying to meet their quotas? “We were at the same high school but didn’t talk much then. We got to know each other properly during the summer break.”
“What’s her personality like?”
“Very obedient, very clingy, and as pretty as a little fairy.”
Hearing their conversation, Chu Siqi, sitting on the right side, leaned back in her seat, her gaze drifting out of the window. Everything seemed unreal to her.
She realized that relationships lasting from high school to university were enviable in the eyes of others.
She had never known this before, always believing that being admired and pursued by many was more prideful.
But then…
Very obedient and clingy?
No matter how she thought about it, Chu Siqi couldn’t associate these words with the cold and distant Feng Nanshu, bathed in moonlight.
How could such a girl be very obedient and clingy?
However, Huiru had witnessed it herself, leaving Chu Siqi no choice but to believe it. Moreover, the expression on Jiang Qin’s face when he spoke of his girlfriend was one of genuine happiness.
After a while, Jiang Qin parked the car in the front plaza and let the three passengers out. After exchanging a few pleasantries, he drove away. As he exited the university gates, he glanced at the bow tie placed in front of the passenger seat, hesitating whether to put it in the storage box.
He found it somewhat distressing to be constantly asked about his girlfriend.
But after pondering for a moment, he smiled slightly, thinking it was best to just leave it there. Hiding it deliberately would only make things more conspicuous, as if he were too caught up in the act.
What do I have to fear?
I am fearless in front of both heaven and earth!
Meanwhile, Dong Min, accompanied by the photographer and Chu Siqi, met with the student who had exemplified honesty and integrity for their next interview.
This senior student was facing a formal journalist for the first time and was visibly nervous, constantly fiddling with the folds of his jeans, especially disoriented by the sound of the SLR camera’s shutter.
In such cases, a journalist needs to guide the interview with probing questions.
The original question was: What made you think of returning the wallet?
But now it needed to be reframed: Did you return the wallet because you possess an inner sense of integrity and kindness?
With the question modified, the interviewee simply had to agree, making the process much simpler.
Half an hour later, Dong Min and her team left the teaching building and arrived at the rest area in the front plaza. She unconsciously rubbed her face.
The two interviews had left her with completely different impressions.
Despite being just a freshman, Jiang Qin was calm and collected throughout the interview, with every answer well-crafted. The interview about the act of honesty was exhausting, mostly led by Dong Min’s guiding questions, requiring her to maintain a smile, leaving her face somewhat stiff.
“Do you feel the difference between the interviewees?” Dong Min asked.
Chu Siqi nodded in response: “The more I think about it, the more impressive Jiang Qin’s interview seems. You hardly had to say anything, Ms. Dong. He controlled the entire pace.”
Dong Min smiled slightly: “But people who can control the pace like Jiang Qin are rare, especially in university. Most are nervous, and even if they’re not, their responses aren’t straightforward enough for reporting. Jiang Qin is an exception, not the norm. That’s why I brought you here.”
“He really is outstanding, isn’t he?” Chu Siqi looked up.
Dong Min nodded: “From that interview alone, I can’t think of any better way to respond than how Jiang Qin did. Although he wasn’t speaking from the heart, purely aiming for a higher tone, the ability to do so comfortably is quite formidable.”
“I see,” Chu Siqi felt an even greater contrast in her heart.
While they were speaking, the photographer received a call and came back muttering, “The editor said we can’t use solo photos, the focus should be on the Entrepreneurship Center.”
“Why didn’t he say so earlier?” Dong Min was somewhat exasperated.
“Anyway, we haven’t left yet. Let’s go take some more photos.”
With the mood of a weary worker, Dong Min opened her phone to call Director Gu.
Director Gu happily agreed to the additional coverage, as showcasing Linchuan University’s support for entrepreneurial students along with promoting Jiang Qin would be ideal.
Thus, the address of Room 208 of the Entrepreneurship Center and Cao Xinyue’s phone number were sent to Dong Min’s phone.
At the same time, in the main office of the Entrepreneurship Center, Tang Lin and the Vice Chairman of the International Trade Department, Xue Gang, were having a serious conversation in the corridor.
“Senior, if you don’t start making your presence felt, Hong Yan might end up with someone else,” Tang Lin warned.
Xue Gang didn’t believe it: “Who?”
Tang Lin pointed in the direction of Room 208: “The same Jiang Qin I told you about last time. They’ve already progressed to the point of going out for meals together!”
“I’ve had meals with Hong Yan too, so what?” Xue Gang retorted.
“But what if I told you that it was Hong Yan who took the initiative to ask Jiang Qin out for a meal? What then?” Tang Lin challenged.
Hearing this, Xue Gang’s expression turned serious: “Hong Yan took the initiative to ask him out? Are you sure?”
Tang Lin nodded affirmatively: “I was there when it happened. But don’t worry, according to my precise calculations, your chances of success are 41%, while Jiang Qin’s are 40%. For now, you still have the upper hand.”
“Doesn’t that mean he could surpass me with just a little effort? What kind of advantage is that?”
“He’s been quite busy lately, often not around. That’s why I called you here, to make your presence felt and widen the gap. Did you think I’d just have your milk tea for nothing?”
After hearing this, Xue Gang felt a surge of urgency: “Tell me more about this Jiang Qin.”
Tang Lin was surprised: “Didn’t I already send you a document with all his information?”
“I was too confident last time and didn’t take it seriously, just skimmed through it.”
Reluctantly, Tang Lin summarized Jiang Qin’s profile for Xue Gang, who laughed upon hearing it.
Is that all?
A freshman from the Finance Department, an entrepreneur in school, what of it?
No matter how influential he is on campus, it’s not like he can make much of a splash in the real world.
Besides, as the Vice Chairman of the International Trade Department, he wasn’t lesser than an entrepreneurial student in status.
And as for earning half a million a month, Xue Gang, whose family owned a coal company, wasn’t impressed by such a figure.
While they were talking, the door of the main office opened, and Cao Xinyue came out with Hong Yan, waving at Tang Lin before heading towards the entrance of the Entrepreneurship Center.
Dong Min and her team soon arrived and, after exchanging brief pleasantries, were led by Cao Xinyue to Room 208.
Now, only Chu Siqi, Hong Yan, Tang Lin, and Xue Gang were left in the corridor.
Linchuan University’s campus was so vast that without a prior appointment, it was unlikely for people to bump into each other by chance. Yet, the world is full of such inexplicable coincidences.
Coincidences that cause those who wish to meet to miss each other and those who wish to avoid each other to meet again.
So, when Chu Siqi saw Hong Yan, her expression instantly changed.
Jiang Qin’s office was here, and so was Hong Yan. She wasn’t a fool not to sense something amiss.
“Hong Yan, are you still chasing after Jiang Qin?”
“…”
“?????”
Tang Lin’s expression changed, wondering why such a question was posed. She looked at her friend, who was staring coldly at Hong Yan, her eyes indifferent, showing no intention of rebutting.
Xue Gang, standing beside them, was equally puzzled, thinking to himself how direct this girl was.
“So what if I am? What’s it to you?” Hong Yan retorted coldly, not bewildering Chu Siqi, but rather leaving Tang Lin and Xue Gang dumbfounded.
Chapter 129: Dominating the Scene Without a Word
TL: Etude
The war between women can be terrifying.
Especially when one of the participants is a woman named Chu Siqi – that makes it even more frightening…
At that time, Hong Yan was in the corridor, glaring angrily at her. Within a few sentences, they had already started arguing fiercely.
Tang Lin and Xue Gang were completely dumbfounded, leaning against the cold wall tiles, watching in disbelief as the two beauties quarreled over a man, unable to recover their senses for a long time.
However, during their quarrel, they began to understand the true nature of the situation.
Chu Siqi and Hong Yan used to be dormitory sisters, truly a rare combination as both were considered the beauties of the campus. Such a pairing should have become a delightful tale.
But for the sake of competing for Jiang Qin’s affections, the two could no longer maintain their sisterly bond, almost turning into enemies.
After the end of the National Day holiday, following her family’s advice, Hong Yan transferred to the International Trade Department, cutting off all contact with Chu Siqi, even deleting her from QQ.
But today, they coincidentally met again and started their rivalry over Jiang Qin anew.
Same dormitory, beautiful sisters, turning against each other for love, angrily switching departments, an unexpected reunion, jealousy, unresolved feelings, and the reignition of conflict.
Tang Lin and Xue Gang, piecing together the story through speculation and imagination, were completely astonished.
What kind of charm did Jiang Qin possess to make two campus beauties from Linchuan University fight over him to such an extent?
It seemed unbelievable. Not even the kin of the god of matchmaking could pull off such a feat.
Xue Gang couldn’t comprehend it. No matter how handsome, how much more could one be? Especially since Hong Yan was not someone who only looked at appearances. So, how immense must Jiang Qin’s personal charm be?
However, Tang Lin didn’t ponder much on this. Seeing her close friend being bullied, she decisively suppressed her doubts and joined her friend in targeting Chu Siqi.
This was not only supporting a friend but also standing on the side of justice.
“Chu Siqi, aren’t you going too far? You keep him hanging and won’t allow others to like him. What kind of reasoning is that? Even I find it absurd!” she exclaimed.
“What’s it to you?” Chu Siqi retorted sharply, biting her lip.
Tang Lin boldly disagreed, “How can it not concern me? I’m Hong Yan’s sister. Do you think it doesn’t involve me?”
“We can resolve the issues between me and Hong Yan on our own. Can you not talk so much? Okay?” Chu Siqi responded.
Ignoring her, Tang Lin turned to her friend, “Hong Yan, I support you. If you want to pursue Jiang Qin, I’ll help you!”
Xue Gang, listening on the side, was baffled, thinking, wasn’t she supposed to be on my side? How did she suddenly switch allegiances?
What on earth was happening?
But to his surprise, Hong Yan shook her head, a hint of helplessness in her smile, “Actually, I didn’t plan on pursuing him anymore. I just said that in the heat of the argument.”
Tang Lin couldn’t understand her friend’s thoughts, “Are you willing to let Jiang Qin go to her? Are you okay with that?”
“He’s not an object to be given away, is he?”
“Exactly! Pursue, pursue, pursue. We absolutely can’t let this Chu woman continue her arrogance!” Tang Lin emphasized her determination by repeating ‘pursue’ three times.
Hong Yan couldn’t help but glance at Chu Siqi, “Even if I give up, it won’t be possible for her either.”
“Why not?”
Tang Lin asked, immediately gasping in shock, her eyes wide with fear, looking at Hong Yan, “Don’t tell me Jiang Qin doesn’t like women?”
Xue Gang, also listening, was utterly confused.
The goddess I’m desperately chasing is herself chasing another, and there’s another goddess competing with her.
Both goddesses are competing, and yet the man in question doesn’t love either. What kind of aloof male god script is this? Can someone write one for me?
“What nonsense are you talking? What do you mean he doesn’t like women?” Chu Siqi, infuriated, retorted.
Tang Lin glanced back at her, “Although I dislike you, I have to admit you are very attractive. Of course, Hong Yan is definitely better looking. How could Jiang Qin possibly not like either of you?”
As soon as she finished speaking, the sound of small, tapping footsteps echoed through the empty corridor.
Tap, tap, tap…
In the silence that followed Tang Lin’s question, the crisp sound of footsteps became especially clear.
Hong Yan and Chu Siqi couldn’t help but look over, seeing a pair of slender, fair hands pushing open the door of the Entrepreneurship Center. Under the gentle sunlight, an elegant figure entered their sight.
The girl was wearing a long black dress that accentuated her snow-white skin, with a red belt at the waist and a shopping bag from a fruit store in her hand.
Her lips were rosy, her nose high, and her beautiful eyes deep and cool. Her delicate features were flawless.
She walked over, expressionless, and the mere sound of her footsteps created a sense of oppression.
Chu Siqi felt a slight suffocation, her confidence and arrogance disappearing in an instant.
She knew this person.
It was Feng Nanshu, the aloof moonlight who had overshadowed her throughout high school, also known as the heavenly beauty and genius student of the first class.
Wang Huiru had mentioned that Jiang Qin had been with her since the summer vacation.
But honestly, although she wanted to believe her best friend, Chu Siqi had always found it hard to fully believe it.
Mentioning Feng Nanshu’s name could even make someone as proud as Chu Siqi feel a sense of self-inflicted shame, unable to muster any thoughts of comparison.
She admitted that Jiang Qin was outstanding, but deep down, she always felt he and Feng Nanshu were not from the same world.
And now, Feng Nanshu was walking towards her, making her feelings of palpitations and powerlessness more pronounced.
She was incredibly beautiful, with an indescribable nobility, especially that cool demeanor, which really exerted a great psychological pressure.
“?”
So many people, kind of scary. Maybe I should leave.
Because she wasn’t led by Jiang Qin, the little rich lady felt panicked seeing so many people and wanted to leave. But the fruits in her bag were heavy, and she really didn’t want to carry them back.
After thinking for a while, Feng Nanshu decided to continue with an expressionless face, pretending not to see anyone, and just walked past.
Tang Lin, who had been ready to continue the argument and encourage Hong Yan, paused in confusion upon seeing the sudden change in expression of the two.
She turned to look in the direction from where Feng Nanshu was coming.
The little rich lady walked past, expressionless and seemingly indifferent to everyone, but actually very nervous inside, pretending not to notice anyone.
Tang Lin was surprised, finding the girl before her exceptionally beautiful, wondering why someone could have such an attractive face.
Xue Gang shared her expression of curiosity, wondering who this girl was. Hong Yan and Chu Siqi were there, supposedly the highest standard of beauty at Linchuan University, but the radiance of the girl before them seemed to overshadow both.
So, who really was the campus beauty?
“Sister Feng, long time no see.”
Hong Yan suddenly spoke, her tone much gentler than before, no longer as cold and irritable.
The little rich lady stopped, recognizing Hong Yan as the person she had dined with that day, and opened her bag to hand her a banana.
This was the greatest gesture of kindness she could muster under such scrutiny.
But speaking was out of the question; she was too nervous to talk.
Hong Yan took the banana, thinking that Feng sister was really cool and imposing. Without saying a word, she had silenced everyone. If she had half the confidence and dominance of Feng sister, she wouldn’t have been so exhausted arguing with Chu Siqi. Such a way of dominating others with one’s presence was something she feared she would never learn.
Meanwhile, Feng Nanshu suddenly seemed to sense something and turned her head to glance at Chu Siqi.
Chu Siqi, not knowing why Feng Nanshu was staring at her, could only pretend to look away nonchalantly, but her heart had already crumbled.
Some things, once witnessed, left no room for disbelief.
She had to accept that Jiang Qin’s indifference that summer was not a mere spat with her. He had Feng Nanshu’s affection; all the speculations and rumors now became a shadow looming over her heart.
So well-behaved and clingy, beautiful like a little fairy…
Chu Siqi couldn’t help but recall the conversation in the car and Jiang Qin’s face, beaming with indulgent joy.
Then, the little rich lady left the scene of the argument without expression, her light footsteps quickly disappearing around the corner of the corridor. There, she quietly peeled an orange to eat, calming herself down, and took out her phone to ask Jiang Qin when he would come back to walk with her.
“Come on, let’s continue arguing, this isn’t over yet!”
Tang Lin treated the little rich lady’s passing as just an interlude in the argument.
“Never mind, let’s not argue anymore.”
Chu Siqi suddenly felt tired, her eyelashes trembling, devoid of her earlier arrogance.
“What’s the matter? Scared? If you’re scared, then don’t come back and act all high and mighty again!”
Chu Siqi turned her head away, feeling dejected, “I’m not scared, I just feel that arguing is pointless now.”
Tang Lin chuckled, her mouth curling up like the waist of a cotton trouser, “You were the one arguing the most fiercely just now. Why is it pointless all of a sudden?”
After hearing this, Chu Siqi pursed her lips, feeling the surrealness of the day.
Hong Yan couldn’t help but speak up, “That’s because she finally realized she never had a chance from the beginning.”
“…”
Hong Yan’s words were filled with irony. In the past, Chu Siqi would have retorted, but now she just stared blankly out the window, feeling a huge emptiness inside.
Tang Lin couldn’t help but be curious, “Why, how did she suddenly come to this realization?”
“Didn’t you see Sister Feng who just passed by?”
Tang Lin nodded, unable to forget such a face, “I saw her. So aloof and beautiful. Why didn’t she participate in the campus beauty contest? If she had, who would dare claim they’re the campus beauty!”
Hong Yan sighed, “What if I told you she’s likely the owner of room 208?”
“?????”
Tang Lin’s eyes widened in disbelief, feeling like she was witnessing a series of unbelievable tales unfold.
The competition between Hong Yan and Chu Siqi for Jiang Qin was strange enough, but the revelation that the girl who overshadowed them in beauty was the owner of room 208 was even more astonishing!
Xue Gang, who had been quietly observing from the corner, was speechless.
Well, there you have it. The campus beauties of Linchuan University all belonged to Jiang Qin.
And now, someone even more stunning than the campus beauties was also his.
Heh, what exactly was I here for today?
Chapter 130: Business is All About Tricks
TL: Etude
Jiang Qin was completely unaware of the events unfolding at the Entrepreneurship Center because he had spent the entire afternoon at Linchuan University of Science and Technology following an interview at noon.
The business at the Xi Tian branch was doing quite well, already showing signs of long queues. However, the three neighboring tea shops were not sitting idly by.
To counter Xi Tian’s dominance, they had secretly joined forces and been running a price-cutting promotion for the past three days, turning the whole event into a highly competitive affair.
Jiang Qin thought this was quite normal since there’s no business without competition.
He calmly had the part-time college students in his shop place a well-prepared signboard at the most conspicuous spot under the girls’ dormitory. Seizing the opportunity, he launched the concept of “The First Cup of Xi Tian of Autumn,” and had four banners hung at the four entrances – north, south, east, and west. This strategy effectively left the three competing shops across the street without business for an entire afternoon.
“Little Liu, why are you playing with your phone during work hours?”
“Boss, we don’t have any customers; everyone’s gone to the other side.”
The owner of the ‘Really Tasty’ Tea Shop gritted his teeth in frustration as he watched the long queue at the opposing store.
At this moment, Jiang Qin was standing on the steps of Xi Tian, listening to Wei Lanlan’s work report while distributing flyers to students passing by.
The name Xi Tian itself was quite interesting. In their promotion, they intentionally separated the two characters, infusing the meaning of “liking the sweetness of you,” and combined with the “First Cup of Xi Tian of Autumn,” their marketing strategy was exceptionally powerful. (ignore it, doesn’t make sense in English)
Price promotions are indeed very attractive to regular buyers, but if it’s about buying gifts, then promotions lose their significance.
Simply put, this trick is akin to marketing strategies that bind diamonds with love. Ordinary diamonds have little value by themselves, but once associated with love, even if they’re exorbitantly priced, people rush to buy them.
What’s most crucial is not the price, but the atmosphere created by marketing.
“Boss, what’s this trick? How is it so effective?” Wei Lanlan was puzzled seeing the rapid return of customers.
Jiang Qin stood on the steps of the tea shop, grinning: “I’m giving the goddess the first cup of Xi Tian of Autumn. She’ll be so happy, she might even give me the ‘good guy’ card!”
“?????”
Wei Lanlan was baffled, then watched as Jiang Qin walked away gracefully towards the opposite comprehensive building.
Linchuan University provided reasonable support for the work-study program. Although there was no substantial financial aid, they at least provided an activity classroom.
Now, this classroom was the new base for the content and technology teams, who, under the leadership of Dong Wenhao, were constantly stirring things up on the forum, striving to increase user retention.
Entering room 502, Jiang Qin began checking the data. He noticed that the forum’s retention rate at the university was quite good, with daily active users increasing from less than twenty thousand to forty thousand.
Of course, this was buoyed by the event, and the true retention rate would only be evident after the event’s conclusion.
“Our Accounting Department’s Cui Yan is the real campus beauty, the rest step aside!”
“Are you blind? It’s obviously senior Gui Taoying who’s the top campus beauty!”
“Just an ordinary Linchuan passerby here, but from the photos, Mao Dan is the prettiest!”
“Shut up, top! With heavy makeup and professional photoshoots, of course the pictures look good!”
“Excuse me, but once our Chemical Engineering Department’s senior Pang Duo steps in, all the other beauties can retreat!”
Jiang Qin browsed through several posts and found they were similar to Linchuan’s previous campus beauty selection posts. The biggest difference was the involvement of Linchuan students.
These students were quite playful, constantly instigating conflicts in the university’s forum section, inadvertently starting an interaction between the two schools.
Of course, there were many arguments, but for a forum, disputes often bring unexpected popularity.
“Boss, should we delete these Linchuan posts?”
“Leave them, except for those that involve personal attacks. Let them participate. Who doesn’t like to look at beauties? It’s like a talent show. Watching others fervently select their campus beauties, this kind of participation is addictive. We can’t neglect our old users for the sake of new ones.”
After listening to Jiang Qin, Dong Wenhao found it reasonable: “Then should I open up a voting channel for Linchuan as well?”
Jiang Qin immediately waved his hand, “No, don’t open the voting. The campus beauty of Science and Technology University should only be chosen by its own students. What’s the point if Linchuan University gets involved? That would cause resentment.”
“Alright.”
“Oh, and Wenhao, I have a friend named Guo Zihang who studies computer science. Arrange for him to join and get some training. He might not pick up much technical stuff, but gaining some experience would be good, especially in improving his communication skills. The guy even struggles to speak with the cafeteria ladies.”
“Sure, boss. The tech team is currently led by Yang Shuai. I’ll have him work with Yang Shuai.”
Jiang Qin nodded, sent a message to Guo Zihang to come over, and got a nervous reply from him asking if he was really capable. Jiang Qin scoffed at the screen, thinking, how would I know if you can do it or not.
However, Guo eventually agreed, knowing his weaknesses and the necessity to overcome them. He realized that one day he would graduate, join society, and have to do things he wasn’t good at.
Rather than being passively crushed by the gears of fate, it’s better to prepare in advance to avoid being caught off guard.
Having dealt with the forum issues, Jiang Qin quickly ate some biscuits and sachima to fill his stomach, then started preparing for the upcoming interviews for the poverty aid work-study positions.
Work-study wasn’t just about slogans; having done the interviews and taken advantage of the publicity, it was time to get things done.
Of course, he wouldn’t conduct the interviews alone. Jiang Qin had also involved Director Hu from the Youth League Committee and Zhang Ming’an from the university office.
This was partly to involve them, giving them a sense of participation in this external project, and to foster their affinity for it, smoothing the transition for the upcoming “group buying” initiative.
On the other hand, being poor doesn’t equate to being virtuous. By involving these two first, he could avoid bearing the brunt alone if any of the newly recruited caused trouble later.
“Hello teachers, my name is Ran Fu from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature. I wish to join the forum’s content team.”
“Hello everyone, my name is Lai Cunqing from the Computer Science Department. I want to join the tech team.”
“I’m candidate number 24, Jia Wenting…”
“I’m Liu Mingyu…”
“Gao Mowen…”
The afternoon sun was warm. Jiang Qin sat expressionless in the central seat of the interview panel, his gaze sweeping over the nervous and naïve faces. He kept scoring on the interview sheets and handed them to the scorekeeper.
Sheet after sheet, the faces of the candidates and their varying scores told their own stories.
“This Lai Cunqing is not bad, quite articulate,” Hu Maolin whispered to Jiang Qin.
Jiang Qin nodded, “He’s decent, but lacks relevant project experience. I suggest sending him to the marketing team to start with some fieldwork.”
“Weren’t your team from Linchuan University also inexperienced at first?”
“That was because we were pressed for time and had to use whoever was available. But the dropout rate, whether due to inability or unwillingness to work, was quite high. Now, these positions are tied to poverty aid. It’s better to be cautious.”
After listening, Hu Maolin agreed, “The marketing team is fine. I’ve heard that the commission there is quite good. Let’s keep him then.”
“Okay, Director.”
Jiang Qin wrote a note on the interview sheet: ‘Approved by Director Hu for archival purposes. In case of any issues, Director Hu, you can’t blame me for inadequacy.’ He grinned cheekily.
“You, with all your tricks!” Hu Maolin exclaimed.
Zhang Ming’an suddenly leaned in, coughing, “Gentlemen, the school office’s photographer is coming. Sit up straight and look lively.”
At this, Jiang Qin and Hu Maolin immediately straightened their backs, putting on vibrant smiles.
An hour later, all 26 candidates had been interviewed. Director Hu suggested keeping 9, Zhang Ming’an favored 7, and Jiang Qin personally found 3 to be satisfactory.
This outcome was influenced by their different perspectives. Director Hu was more concerned with fulfilling job quotas, Zhang Ming’an favored candidates with a simple and honest appearance, while Jiang Qin focused on practicality – whether the candidates were competent and useful.
“Jiang Qin, are you busy this afternoon? Why don’t you come to my office for a chat?”
“I’d better not, Director Hu. I need to return to my university; there’s some work waiting for me there. Next time, I’ll treat you to a meal.”
Watching Jiang Qin’s departing figure, Hu Maolin suddenly remembered that this young man was a student from Linchuan University and only collaborated with Science and Technology University.
Damn, it would have been great if he had filled out his exam answer sheet incorrectly.
After leaving the interview venue, Jiang Qin drove back to Linchuan University. Despite a day of rushing around and feeling physically exhausted, he still had to check on the progress of Su Nai’s “group buying” project. Being a boss was indeed not easy.
Jiang Qin parked his car at the entrance and walked into the Entrepreneurship Center, only to see Tang Lin and an unfamiliar young man standing at the door of the main office, both looking incredibly upset and the atmosphere quite tense.
Especially when Jiang Qin passed them in the corridor, both of them fixed their gaze on him.
Tang Lin’s eyes were filled with confusion, disbelief, and bewilderment.
The young man looked at him with wariness, envy, and undisguised jealousy.
“?”
Jiang Qin was puzzled, feeling something was off.
Was he looking better than usual today? Otherwise, where did that young man’s jealousy come from?
But he didn’t pay too much attention to it. After all, he wasn’t familiar with Tang Lin and didn’t even know the guy next to her. So, he walked upstairs to room 208.
It wasn’t until his figure disappeared around the corner of the staircase that Xue Gang and Tang Lin withdrew their gaze, still feeling somewhat dazed.
“That person is Jiang Qin?”
“Yes.”
“Didn’t you say his success rate was only forty percent?” Xue Gang’s mouth twitched in disbelief.
Tang Lin bit her pale lips, “Maybe… I missed a zero?”
“You might as well not have invited me to boost my presence. I came all pumped up, didn’t even get to talk to Hong Yan, and got overshadowed by someone who wasn’t even there!”
“I didn’t do it on purpose, it was a mistake!”
“You’re just spreading false information. Missing a zero is no big deal for you, but do you know how much psychological harm that does to me!?”
Feeling utterly frustrated and fuming, Xue Gang turned and stormed off.
Tang Lin wanted to apologize, but as she looked up, she saw Xue Gang accidentally bump into the glass door at the entrance, causing her to shudder.
“Senior, please… take care.”
“Get lost!!!”
Tang Lin nervously smiled for a while and then carefully opened the door, looking at her best friend who was sitting at her desk. After a whole afternoon of cooling off, Hong Yan’s mood had improved significantly, and her aggression had lessened, making Tang Lin feel somewhat relieved.
“Tang Lin, can you help me organize these bound documents into the file bag?”
“Oh, sure.”
Tang Lin hurried over, took out a file bag from the cabinet, and wanted to ask something but couldn’t bring herself to do it.
